California Handsfree Compliancy Jumpstarts Innovation

Santa Cruz, California Based BlueTraks Offers Compliant Products

Las Vegas, NV – January 8, 2007 – Americans are easily distracted, more so when they’re in their cars. Americans spend more than 500 million hours per week in their cars, where 70% of all mobile phone calls are made. According to a study by the California Highway Patrol, use of handheld mobile phone while driving is the leading cause of accidents involving distracted drivers. California has over 200,000 vehicle accidents annually.

The startling statistics prompted California to enact SB 1316, the state’s first law essentially requiring mandatory hands-free mobile phone support for Californian’s 30,000,000 registered vehicles. The hands-free law which is to take effect July 2008, prohibits the use of a handheld mobile phone while operating a vehicle, except for emergency 911 calls. Still the fact remains that drivers spend more than 1.5 hours per day in their vehicles and drivers do more than just use their mobile phones.

“Many consumers are equipping their cars with plug-in gadgets to add iPod®, satellite radio, and satellite navigation. It’s so they can make the most of their time in the car being productive and entertained.  The only problem is those mobile devices are independent of each other.  So operating those devices adds another degree of difficulty and distraction. All together a major highway safety issue for the driver and others on the road,” says Alex Nagy, President and CEO of BlueTraks, a Santa Cruz, CA based company that develops in-vehicle telematics systems.

The BlueTraks BT-211 is the first product by BlueTraks to meet compliancy with California hands-free law (SB 1613) and the California Vehicle Code Section 26708 as well as Minnesota Statutes 2005, Section 169.71 which prohibits any objects to be affixed to a vehicle windshield. BlueTraks is officially launching the BlueTraks BT-211 at the 2007 International CES in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Our product has a small form factor, however it is not a portable device.  This is exactly what makes our product different.  It’s integrated into the vehicle and does not sacrifice the in-vehicle stereo system fidelity because it directly wired to existing speakers and stereo unit rather than having to resort to an FM transmitter or add-on speakers. On average, people own their cars for more than five years and many more people own cars without integrated Bluetooth® wireless technology, which is why we’re here to help them be in compliance of the law and enjoy features like iPod®, navigation guidance or satellite radio all in one device,” says Mr. Nagy who is a veteran of developing cutting edge technologies in the semiconductor industry while at notable companies as Teradyne, Fairchild Systems Test, and Photon Dynamics.

The BlueTraks BT-211 is available through authorized distributors beginning April 2007 in models BT-211P, BT-211N, BT-211S which all offer Bluetooth® hands-free phone support and iPod® player interface as standard features. BT-211N and BT-211S have the addition of satellite navigation guidance while the BT-211S is the only model to include all the previously mentioned features along with a satellite radio tuner.  Base MSRP for the BT-211S is US$1299.
